Enrich your vocabulary || TOEFL words: jibe (verb)

This verb has three distinct meanings. When it means agree, it is usually followed by the preposition with. But it can also be "to say insulting, mocking, challenging words." The third use is nautical: "to change a boat's course suddenly by shifting the boom."

Read the example sentences based on Merriam-Webster's entry and say which definition applies in each case:

1/ ...this maneuver was bound to force her to jibe her mainsail from one side to the other

---Jack London

2/ His version of the events doesn't jibe with the facts!

3/ The two young boys jibed each other before throwing punches.
