The six sounds "oo" can make | the subjunctive in English | accolade

Pronunciation Practice: Did you know that "oo" can make six different sounds? I certainly didn't realize this until this past week, and I've been teaching and tutoring English for well over a decade. It came as a big surprise to me when I searched for the different pronunciations for "oo" and came across this video and post from Rachel's English.

Try saying these words. Each one uses one of the six sounds "oo" can make:

food
cook
flood
door
zoology
brooch

Can you think of any other words with "oo" that are pronounced like "oo" in food? Or like "oo" as in cook?

High-Level Grammar: The subjunctive mood in English is rarely used. One of the uses is in second conditional sentences with "if" clauses. It also appears in sentences that express wishes or requests.
